NSW: Elderly woman dies after hit and run on highway

SYDNEY, Dec 16 AAP - An elderly woman has died after being struck in a hit-and-run accident and then run over by a second car in the NSW Blue Mountains.

A semi-trailer travelling east on the Great Western Highway near Blackheath shopping centre struck the woman as she crossed the street about 9am (AEDT) on Tuesday, police said.

The truck driver failed to stop and the woman, a Blackheath resident, was then run over by a Hyundai sedan.

The 73-year-old died at the scene.

Traffic diversions are in place and police are stopping heavy vehicles at the Mt Boyce weigh station, as well as the Hazelbrook heavy vehicle stop.
